Having Sarah Withdrawals

Where can I buy a Parka?

It was a passing remark by Sarah in the early morning hours on Election Day. Just minutes after voting in her hometown of Wasilla, Alaska, Sarah took a few questions from Obama's fan base, the traveling press corp. She told them she was glad they were there with her, in the "crisp, clean environment," pointing out to them how far removed it was from Washington. And therein lies the reason she confounds her critics and receives adulation from the common folks. She IS very far from Washington.

May I enlighten all the mainstream media people who made it their mission to publicly humiliate, skewer and crucify this woman for two months? I will also include the talking head conservative-lite pundits who eventually turned on Sarah for petty reasons. You guys seem to be unable to grasp why Sarah was garnering throngs of Obama-sized crowds across the U.S. while John McCain and Joe Biden were gathering in hundreds. You want to know the secret? Here it is. Sarah is one of us. And we are convinced we can run Washington way better than the clowns that are there.

This whole election made me long for a button in the voting booth that said "Purge the Entire Congress." Our founding fathers foresaw many things in their eternal wisdom, but they didn't envision a day when the people would be so disgusted by every single person in the halls of the House and Senate that we want to hit the Eject button. Yes, we would even be willing to (gasp) live without the Federal Government for a few months until we could wrangle up some citizen politicians to fill their spots. You know the kind I mean, people like Joe the Plumber, Emmy the School Teacher, Tom the Insurance Salesman and Sarah from Alaska. I know it's shocking news, but we don't believe anything ANY politician of any ilk tells us anymore. They get power, they get corrupt and somehow, we end up paying for it. But Sarah made us feel as if we had a chance – through her – to go to Washington ourselves and clean house.

Sarah is every woman I've ever known. She's my sister and my mother. Strong, sassy, funny, busy as hell, gracious, tough, wife, mother, career woman, fisher, hunter, runner, PTA mom – she's my best friend and my best friend's friend. We manage businesses and school lunches and kids after-school activities. We work long hours for little pay and we still do laundry and clean the toilets. We budget our household finances and we find extra money every now and then to buy something cute for ourselves. We run OUR worlds and assume that surely someone can figure out how to do the same thing on a larger scale. And every week, we all get together for lunch and come up with ingenious ways to fix the world. We don't get the chance, mind you, but we felt like we had that chance via Sarah.

My husband has been bugging me for years to go to Alaska for a cruise. I balked at the distance and money because it seemed like a state so very far away; almost like a foreign country. Now, I'm looking at brochures. Suddenly, Alaska feels very much like home.
